Beauty Sample Saturday #1

Last week, two wonderful BeautyTubers (YouTubers who make videos about beauty products) I watch started a challenge for May. They found themselves with a mountain of samples and decided to use one sample each day in May and then post mini reviews.  They invited other BeautyTubers and subscribers to join in. I replied that my YouTube adventures are on hold but write a blog and would love to join. So here I am! I found out about the challenge on May 4th.

The two YouTube Beauties who motivated me to do this are:
Olivia and here is her video (channel name: makeupfunwitholivia)
Cherylene and here is her video (channel name: Cherylene)

May 4 John Frieda Frizz-Ease Straight Fixation Smoothing Cream
John Frieda Straight Fixation
This is a no for me. I have very frizzy hair. No idea why, but I do. The only answer is a flat iron. How did I live before the flat iron was invented? Seriously. But it is ruining my hair. Luckily, I don't need to wash my hair daily so I only use the iron every second or third day.my ends are at least three years old I would guess. They've taken a lot of punishment and most of it is from the flat iron. If I could find a product to take away frizz and lessen my use of a flat iron, I'd be one happy girl. This product was not the answer. P.S. and by the way, the only product I have found to work is Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream. You have to use a lot but holy smokes, it works. Darn, it's expensive. I don't know why, but I don't like spending money on hair products. I'll drop $35 on a lipstick but have heart failure if a shampoo is more than $10. I'm getting over it.

May 5 Michael Todd Pumpkin Rich Facial Mask
Michael Todd Pumpkin Mask
The morning after I used this, I decided I really liked it. Two mornings later, I really really liked it - my skin still felt smooth. This is not your typical pumpkin anything. I have found that pumpkin usually mean pumpkin pie, all those delicious scents and spices. Nope. This is straight up raw slimy pumpkin that looks like thin baby poop on your face and smells like raw slimy pumpkin. This actually tingled a bit which is interesting. Pumpkin has enzymes that eat up dead skin cells buy in a gentle way. Enzymes only work when there is dead skin to munch on. Once the dead yummies are gone the enzymes stop their business so no over-exfoliating. This mask also contains other natural enzymes and acids, including glycolic, which I'm sure gave that tingle. It works. I loved it but if you have very sensitive skin, you might want to skip it. The next morning my skin still felt smooth and it was the next morning that made me a fan.
Baby Poo aka Pumpkin Mask
May 6 Guerlain Meteorites Baby Glow Sheer Makeup
No idea what the purpose of this is other than aromatherapy. This has the iconic violet scent of the original Meteorites but stronger. If you love the scent, I supposed you could wear this as perfume? If you don't like that scent, run for the hills. This is not pearlescent enough to be used as a highlighter. Perhaps if you have a too matte foundation, you could mix some of this in and give the foundation some life. But I don't think so. You'd need to use a lot and that would sheer out your foundation coverage. The Baby Glow, if applied alone, will lighten your skin by a shade so if you are medium or darker, keep that in mind.

May 7 Glamglow Supercleanse Daily Clearing Cleanser, Mud to Foam
Glamglow Supercleanse Daily Cleanser
I'm not on the Glamglow band wagon. Not one bit. I'm pretty sure I've tried all versions of their masks as well as the eye mask which, to me, was like putting boogers or phlegm under my eyes. From baby poo to phlegm, I leave no stone unturned. I realize makeup has no real purpose, it's all in the imagination and ego. Trust me, on this I am an expert! It's completely superfluous, unlike calcium supplements and monthly breast self-exams which are both truly needed. Skin care isn't nearly as important as your monthly self-exam but it does have purpose, more so than makeup (pains me to say that). Skincare should effect change or hold off change or reverse change or something, ie, a purpose, an end goal. The ingredients determine how effectively the skin care item will, or will not, evoke that change. Glamglow works. But you can get better ingredients for a lot less money. That leaves more money to spend on lipstick. Get it? All about priorities.

Glamgow SuperCleanse
Some great alternatives, that I think work better, too....Get yourself a tub of Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, make a paste in your palm and feel your face throb as this mask pulls out the gunk. Use water, apple cider vinegar, honey, yogurt whatever. You can find this at your local health store or on line. Amazon link is here.  Good ole' Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask at Walgreens or Sally's is also extra-ordinary for cleaning pores, link.  If you like a little glycolic acid and scrubby granules with your clay, hands down the best is Gommage by Serious Skinlink to ebay listings but you can also find it on HSN. If you really like the look of dead seaweed, I mean tea leaves, on your face which is part of Glamglow, then empty a tea bag on your face while the mask is still wet.  Oh, the cleanser sample was fine, very minty, herbal, aromatic, got my face clean. This cleanser contains minimal amounts of glycolic and lactic acids. You can do much better for your problematic skin. Look at Alpha Hydrox or Derma E Glycolic Cleanser.  If you like that minty scent, chew some gum while you're washing your face. P.S. Apply any glycolic cleanser to a dry face. Let it sit on your face a bit, while brushing your teeth or whatever, then add water and cleanse as usual.
Care,

May 8 Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner Primer
Angels are singing! If you have oily skin, this is remarkable. A bit jaw dropping, actually. It does blur the pores as the very clever name (marketing) would indicate but the real magic is how mattifying this primer is. I immediately went to order some. Gulp. Dr. Brandt, may he rest in peace, has some mighty expensive skin care. I shopped around and found an excellent deal on HSN. Normally they are $45 each, I found a duo for $59 and free shipping.

This is fun! Thank you Oliva and Cherylene!
